Selling a slice of paradise: Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi have welcomed Architectural Digest into their home in this month's edition, and it's just hit the market

To say that Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia De Rossi, have a passion for real estate is an understatement.

DeGeneres has opened the doors of the compound she shares with De Rossi to Architectural Digest this month, but admits she's lost track of just how many houses she's bought over the years.

Inner sanctum: The pair are selling the property for $49 million

The talk show behemoth, 53, does know, however that she's added one home for each contended year she's spent with 38-year-old actress De Rossi.

She bought the original house for around $30 million, then scooped up surrounding properties to add to the compound - including one which was transformed into a koi carp lake.

The heavenly property sits on 2.87 acres just off prestigious Coldwater Canyon, behind gates on its very own street.

But now, as the edition is due to hit stands on October 11, Ellen has done what many suspected and listed the house for sale at a whopping $49 million.

This huge price-tag actually means a loss for the couple.

The pair laid out about $48 million to assemble the estate starting in 2007. And now, according to Redfin, the asking price on the whole compound is just $49 million.

Originally constructed for actor Laurence Harvey, the 9,500-square-foot single-storey residence was the glamorous lair of Joan Collins and Will & Grace co-creator Max Mutchnick, who is a close friend of the couple, and helped design the property.

'We'd heard how beautiful it was,' recalls De Rossi, 'and then we came over to watch American Idol. We pulled into the driveway and we just knew before we even walked through the gate.'

Welcome home: The entrance hall is designed to be welcoming and tranquil

Chill zone: The patio area is perfect for summer evenings

Leisure time: Ellen has a pool table for evenings when Los Angeles isn't quite as clement

Bathe your troubles away: This bathroom looks blissful but if doesn't relax you enough, you can head to the meditation room

The property features a pool, media room - where the couple were married in 2008 - and a meditation room.

Official listings of the compound read: 'The compound includes a 9,200 square foot main house, two guesthouses totalling about 15,000 square feet, a three bedroom house, and every conceivable amenity and state-of the-art security.'

And it looks as if the couple may be looking to add to their portfolio as they've also shifted a Hidden Valley compound, this time more of a holiday home with cabins and stables, for a relatively cheap $16 million price tag.

Love at first sight: When the couple visited the house to watch American Idol, they knew they wanted it, according to De Rossi
