Many won't forget a shaven-head Sinead O'Connor singing beautifully into the camera for her 1990 hit Nothing Compares 2 U video.

The music icon has now tried to achieve the same trendsetting look - but failed miserably.

She debuted a newly shaven do at an event in Los Angeles last night, after sporting longer hair for the past few years.

Back to her roots: Singer Sinead O'Connor debuted her newly shaved head at a Los Angeles event last night - the same do she sported in the video for her 1990 hit Nothing Compares 2 U

With her fuller figure, unmatching purple dress and ensemble of tattoos, the Irish singer looked a far from her chart-topping self in the 1990s.

Sinead once insisted she'd shave her head into old age because she felt odd with hair.

Not the same: Sinead, from left, pictured in 2000, soon after her shaven-head appearance in her Nothing Compares 2 U video, sporting longer hair in August and last night

The mother of four explained in an interview once: 'I'd been trying to grow it, but someone asked if I was Enya. I was so shocked, I shaved all my hair off.

'I don't feel like me unless I have my hair shaved. So even when I'm an old lady, I'm going to have it.'

She and Blondie singer Deborah Harry looked more erratic than elegant as they posed together at the amFAR Inspiration Gala held at West Hollywood hotel, The Château Marmont.

Fashion faux pas: Sinead O'Connor and Deborah Harry made some unusual fashion choices as they arrived at the 2011 amfAR Inspiration Gala in Los Angeles at the Château Marmont earlier tonight

The odd couple: Sinead and Deborah seemed to enjoy each other's company as they posed for photographs at tonight's event

Sinead showed off her colourful Jesus tattoo in the centre of her chest and the inking down her forearms.

Deborah also looked bizarre, with an unflattering tartan red, black and white dress which she eccentrically teamed with fishnet pop socks, black elbow length gloves and high heels.

The music veterans seemed particularly happy to see each other at the event, in aid of AmFAR, the foundation for AIDS research, and posed for several photographs together.

Rock and roll: Sinead's outfit showed off her many tattoos while there was no ignoring Debbie in her rather unusual ensemble

Celebrity friends: She had a cigarette break where she mingled with actor Sean Penn and other guests

What were you thinking? Sinead added a grey blazer to her dress as she performed on stage

Sinead has recently been hitting the headlines for her personal life, splitting from her third husband Steve Cooney in March.

The outspoken 44-year-old has also recently criticised the UK X Factor for the way the judges treat the contestants.

'I find it hard to watch it,' she admitted. 'I don't think the people running the show are the kind of people who think about the effect of their behaviour upon people.

Bald ambition: Sinead said in the past she would remain bald even in her old age because she felt off with hair

Crowd pleaser: Deborah performed on stage in front of the crowd at the West Hollywood hotel

Heart of glass: The 66-year-old singer put in an energetic performance at the event

Sinead and Debbie also performed at the event which attracted celebrities of the calibre of Sandra Bullock, Colin Farrell and Rose McGowan.

She put in an energetic performance on the outdoor stage to the assembled partygoers.

Debbie, 66, tours and releases records with Blondie which still consists of her former boyfriend Chris Stein.

One glove: At one point during her performance, the star sung with only one of her long black gloves on
