Captain America: Chris Evans on set in Cleveland Ohio today, which had been dressed to look like New York before being blown up by aliens
Cleveland, Ohio was unrecognisable even to his own citizens today as it was transformed into in a fake New York City street and then blown up on the first day of filming for The Avengers.
But the transformation only added to the excitement, as fans thronged to see the action - filling rooftops to gasp at NYC cabs and cars being blown in the air near the city's Grand Central Market.
They were also treated to the surreal sight of actors running away from apparently nothing, which will be aliens in the film, after the technical wizards have had their fun.
New York, Ohio: The centre of Cleveland had undergone a massive transformation, even before the explosions
Captain America himself, Chris Evans, was also on set today, on the same faux Manhattan street where the 'aliens' attacked with fire bombs later, though he will also be digitally added to the scenes of carnage.
Despite the rainy weather, the 30-year-old looked calm and composed as he shot the very first scene.
Wearing his famous leather bomber jacket, Chris was on set on his own before chatting intently to the director and crew on the ambitious Marvel project.
Apocalyptic scenes: Plumes of black smoke billowed down the street as the cameras captured the action
Chris will be joining his Avengers co-stars Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson and more as they continue filming the Marvel film.
The superhero flick is set to hit cinemas May 4, 2012.
Captain America: The First Avenger hit was released last, and Chris chatted with Celebuzz all about the film, and explained that he earned his fair share of bruises while making it.
He said: 'This was actually a movie where you went home with more bumps and bruises than usual just because he has special power and ability.
Alien invasion: The crew simulated fireballs from an alien attack in faux New York
Carnage: Smashed up cars and rubble lined the street
'He’s not flying around in the sky and he’s not bursting into flames. His powers are grounded in reality. So all he’s able to do are human things and as a result it’s a lot of hand-to-hand combat, in which case they don’t really need CGI so we all had to get the gloves on and get in the ring. You go home feeling pretty sore,' he continued.
Today the work was more gentle as was spotted looking inside a mock Acura dealership on a mock 42nd Street store front.
Bewildered: Captain America finds himself suddenly transported to modern day Manhattan
Chris Evans's character Steve Rogers was originally alive and well in 1944, but then wakes up in 2011.
Today he filmed first scene of his shot where he walks in present day New York City.
Hero: Captain America will eventually save the day but in today's scenes he still appeared to be in shock
